The trick to learning German is to treat each new skill as a building block. It builds on the knowledge you already have and provides a platform that makes the next skill easier to grasp. Many German words themselves are a bit like building bricks. They’re put together from smaller words and units. Once you’ve grasped this concept, your vocabulary acquisition speeds up. As with any skill, practice is the key. The more you practice, the more speaking in German and listening to it become second nature. Add variety by using flashcards to learn vocabulary or by creating funny poems and songs with your new words. It’s also a good idea to watch local TV, listen to German radio and podcasts, and most fun of all, seek out new friends to chat with in your new language.
