B2 German Course: General Topics and the Lingoda Method

In the German B2 course you will cover topics such as: cultural differences in interpersonal relationships and the working world, German history and politics etc. In addition, you will study grammar topics such as “causal and consecutive clauses: weil, denn, deshalb, so…dass”, use of the conditional and the Konjunktiv I.

Here’s a preview of the different curriculum chapters you’ll encounter during your German B2 level courses. This is the curriculum we use for our small group classes, and our private one-on-one classes. If you choose to study a private class as well, you may be able to expand beyond these topics depending on your tutor.

Practise how to talk about student life abroad during an exchange program. You will learn how to conduct a conversation in a citizens’ office and to talk about types of jobs for international students

In this chapter of our B2 German course, you will read about the Erasmus programme and working holiday visas.

In addition, you will practise modal verbs with the passive voice and the ‘Konjunktiv I’.

Practise how to talk about short literature. To do that, you will learn about different genres of short literature and giving an oral presentation about a book.

In this chapter, you will read about fairy tales and short stories. And later, you will write a fairy tale or short story on your own.

In addition, you will practise prepositional nouns and adjectives, and the ‘Konjunktiv I’ and the ‘Konjunktiv II’.

Learn how to talk about the priviledged species on Earth. To do that, you will practise talking about environmental issues in a conversation and justifying your point of view about keeping animals in zoos.

In this chapter, you will read about extict species and the theory of evolution.

In addition, you will learn the future perfect tense and the ‘Partizip I’ and ‘Partizip II’.

Practise talking about feelings in a conversation. For that, you will learn vocabulary related to expressing empathy and understanding.

In this chapter, you will read about human flaws and artificial intelligence.

In addition, you will learn irrealistic comparative sentences and practise the ‘Umstellprobe’.

Practise commenting on someone else’s ideas. You will practise how to politely convince someone of something and practise evaluating information.

In this chapter, you will read about karma, and zen and feng shui.

In addition, you will learn the principle of temporal, causal, modal and local adverbs.

Our courses are broken down and categorized using the CEFR. CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. What is a German B2 course?

A German B2 course represents the upper-intermediate level of language learning. It’s the fourth level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), following on from A1, A2 and B1.

Once you have your B2 certificate, you’ll be able to deal with complex topics and interact fairly comfortably with native-level speakers. You’ll also be able to understand the main information in complex texts.

How long does it take to learn German B2?

It can take around 500 to 600 hours of study to learn German B2, starting from a position of zero experience with the language. The precise amount of time will depend on your approach to learning and your level of commitment. It’s also important to learn from qualified teachers, in an environment that encourages you to speak out loud.

With Lingoda, you can take a German B2 course via three different learning models:

  • Sprint – A 2-month challenge, with either 30 or 60 group classes.
  • Flex – Group or 1-to-1 classes, taken any time that suits you, with the option to change intensity every 4 weeks.
  • Teams – 48 group classes, over 8 or 12 weeks, with fixed classmates and teachers.

Can I learn German B2 by myself?

Independent study can be extremely valuable, but the best results will be achieved through a structured language course, taught by qualified language teachers. This allows mistakes to be corrected quickly and individual feedback to be provided. It also ensures you’re covering all of the most essential topics and rules around grammar.

We recommend taking our B2 level German course and then supplementing this with some additional learning in your own time. Doing so enables you to focus on essential topics in class, while you independently cover some topics that are of specific interest to you. You can use podcasts, books, television shows and movies to assist with this.
